Description

The Dark Doodad is an interesting dark nebula in the southern constellation of Musca (the fly) and is located in the same field of view as the globular cluster NGC 4372 (also Caldwell 108). The popular name Dark Doodad comes from Dennis di Cicco who spotted it in 1986 while observing Halley's comet from Australia (O'Meara 2016:494–95), but the nebula is also catalogued as Sandqvist 149. The Doodad is a three-degrees, curved inky jet stretched across the rich star fields of the southern Milky Way.  NGC 4372 is an especially metal-poor cluster, and it is somewhat obscured by dust in the region (O'Meara 2016:494–497).
